We are a safe space for all humans!
We opened in December of 2020, in the middle of the Covid-19 pandemic. We had many core values in mind when we decided to open our little restaurant, most of all that we would value our staff and pay them all living wages. We feel it is also important to give back to our community, and we host many charity events throughout the year benefitting organziations such as the LGBT Center of Raleigh, Friends of Wake County Animal Center, the SBW Angel Tree program, and several animal rescue organizations.
Jennifer, our founder and the inspiration behind Catalan, has worked in hospitality since 1998. Her father, Eli, passed from Covid in spring of 2020, and left her with a small inheritance. With those funds and the funds of an investment partner, she was able to bring her dream to life! Jennifer hails from NYC and has always wanted to own a small wine & cocktail bar with amazing libations and delicious dishes to complement them. When she saw the space that would eventually become Catalan she was remided of the many restaurants she enjoyed frequenting when she went out in Manhattan in her 20s and 30s.
Catalan Tapas Bar was designed and curated by Jennifer's sister Heather, who has worked in the theater industry for over 10 years. When we say Catalan is a work of art, it truly is! We are also a family business and you will see Jennifer, her partner Jorge, and her children in the restaurant alongside the staff when you visit. You'll also see her business partner, Chris, and his wife Courtney when their schedule allows for them to be present in the builiding.
Chris was one of Catalan's first "regular" customers and Jennifer was excited to be able to bring him and his vast knowledge of wine and customer relations to the team when they became business partners in Spring of 2022. If you have the pleasure of meeting Chris one night when you dine with us, be sure to ask him for wine recommendations, you won't be dissapointed!
